What goes where on collection day?

Blue box

"Containers" blue box:

  • aluminum foil trays and wrap
  • cans: Food and beverage, aerosol and paint
  • drinking boxes, milk and juice cartons
  • glass bottles and jars
  • paper cups (remove plastic lid. and put both cup and lid loose in the blue box)
  • plastic containers: Food and beverage, detergent, personal and pet care, clam shells and rigid plastic retail packaging. Check containers for recycling symbols one through seven.

All containers: Empty, rinse and place loose in blue box.

"Paper products and plastic bags" blue box

  • boxboard: Cereal, tissue, detergent-type boxes, egg cartons, paper tubes from paper towel, etc. and corrugated cardboard (Put smaller pieces in a plastic bag; larger pieces flatten, size maximum 75 centimetres x 75 centimetres x 20 centimetres (30 inches x 30 inches x 8 inches) and bundle.)
  • paper, newspaper, junk mail, envelopes, magazines and books (hard and soft cover) (Put in a plastic bag.)
  • plastic bags: All bags with recyclable symbols two and four; grocery, shopping, zippered bags (no stand-up pouches), dry cleaning, newspaper, bread bags, fresh and frozen fruit/vegetable bags, milk outer and rinsed inner bags, salt bags (softener, road), garden soil and mulch bags, plastic outer wrap from packages of paper towels, napkins and diapers, and plastic outer wrap from cases of pop, juice and snacks (Stuff all inside one bag and tie outer bag closed.)

Green bin

All food waste:

  • baked goods e.g. bread, cookies, pizza
  • baking and cooking ingredients,  dough
  • butter and margarine, grease, lards, fats
  • candy, snack foods
  • cereal
  • cooking oil (maximum one cup) (Drop off larger quantities for recycling.)
  • dairy products e.g. cheese, sour cream
  • coffee filters, grounds, tea bags
  • corn cobs, husks
  • eggs, eggshells
  • fish, fish parts, shellfish
  • fruit
  • grains and rice
  • gravy, sauces, salad dressings
  • jams and jellies
  • meat, meat products, bones
  • nuts and shells, peanut butter
  • pasta
  • vegetables

Paper and other products:

  • facial tissues
  • houseplant waste
  • paper bags, popcorn bags (microwave)
  • paper baking cups
  • paper napkins
  • paper plates
  • pet waste including fur, feathers, kitty litter, dog droppings, etc.
  • sawdust
  • shredded paper
  • wooden toothpicks
  • wood ashes (cold)

Preparation to make collection safe and efficient:

Place pet waste and wood ashes in paper bags or Certified Compostable plastic bags, or layer with other organics.

Maximum weight 23 kg (50 pounds).


  • baby wipes
  • cigarette butts (cold)
  • cleaning wipes
  • drinking straws
  • plastic bubble wrap, standup pouches and cling wrap
  • plastic crinkle wrap (cereal, pasta or snack bags)
  • plastic wrap from meat or cheese products
  • sharp items wrapped in newspaper (i.e. broken glass, mirrors, knives, light bulbs)
  • Styrofoam
  • waxed paper items (fast food cups like slushies)
