Don't know where it goes?

Landlords and Property Owners

Landlords (property owners) eligible for Region curbside collection must ensure that their tenants know and follow the rules and regulations set out in the following by-laws:

Landlords must also provide tenants with the proper waste collection containers, such as:

  • Garbage cans

  • Blue boxes

  • Green bins

To learn about the new March 2017 waste collection services for buildings with 3 to 6 units, and single-family and duplex homes, view our Collection by Building Type page. The Region does not collect waste from large apartments buildings (7 or more units), although they do provide blue and grey cart recycling services.

Informing tenants

The Region offers information and educational tools to help inform your tenants about our waste collections services. Contact us for more information.

Current tools include:

By-law infractions

If tenants do not meet the rules and regulations of the Regional Waste By-laws, landlords and property owners may be subject to fines and possible court appearances.

For more serious or repeat offences, you may receive a summons, and if convicted, may receive a fine of up to $5,000. In addition to a ticket or a summons, your annual tax bill may also include a clean-up cost. The most common by-law infractions relate to early or late placement and non-removal of waste items set out for curbside collection.
