Building Activity

The Region of Waterloo does not issue building permits, but regularly assembles data provided by each of the Area Municipalities. For details about individual permits, please consult the Area Municipalities.

In 2016, the total value of building permits for new construction issued across Waterloo Region was $1.04 billion: $1.14 billion in the residential sector and $250 million in the industrial, commercial and institutional sectors. There was a increase of 36 per cent in the overall value of new construction in 2016 compared with 2015.

Reurbanization levels can also be monitored using building permit data. Permits for new residential units indicate that 54 per cent of units in 2016 were within built-up areas of the region. This is the seventh consecutive year that the Places to Grow target of 40 per cent, and the Regional Official Plan target of 45 per cent of units in the built-up area has been exceeded.
