Region of Waterloo's Active Transportation Master Plan

What is Walk Cycle Waterloo Region

We've developed a plan to make it easier to walk, cycle, and roll in Waterloo Region.ATMP.png

Walk Cycle Waterloo Region will provide guidance to Council and staff on actions to take to make it easier for residents of and visitors to the Region of Waterloo to choose active transportation. Active transportation includes:

  • people with mobility devices
  • walking
  • cycling
  • skateboarding
  • in-line skating

Active transportation can take place along roads, sidewalks and trails. Walk Cycle Waterloo Region will be an action plan to create attractive and comfortable spaces that encourage more people to walk, cycle or roll (in-line skating, skateboarding, mobility devices) to their favourite destinations.

Next Steps

Walk Cycle Waterloo Region was presented to Planning and Works Committee on Feb. 11, 2014. Council directed staff to use th plan as a guiding document for Regional transportation infrastructure planning and construction. At the same time, staff will work with Area Municipalities and other partners to develop network priorities and funding options for future consideration by Regional Council.

Staff aim to bring the ATMP Implementation Plan to Council for consideration in early 2015. As the implementation plan develops, changes to the ATMP may be necessary, and it should be seen as a "living document" that may evolve over time.

Pilot Programs

On Sept. 30, 2014, the Planning and Works Committee received an information report on planned cycling enhancement pilot programs including crossrides and sharrows.

All previous workshop materials can be found on the Public Consultation page.
