Walking
Walking is an easy and efficient method of transportation with many benefits:
- Health: you can burn up to 350 calories per hour while also lowering your blood pressure, strengthening your bones and keeping your appetite regular.
- Environmental: you can do your part to reduce air pollution and make Waterloo Region an even safer and friendlier place to live.
- Economic: walking is free, you eat your fuel and don't have to pay for parking!
It's important to choose a route that's interesting, accessible, safe and convenient. A route with frequent transit stops is also a good idea, in case you get tired or if you're running late and need to hop on a bus. Other factors include smooth sidewalks, curb cuts, good lighting, and the ability to be seen by others.
In winter, routes along busier streets tend to be cleared regularly, but some mixed-use paths are not cleared at all, so be sure to plan your route ahead of time.
