Meet Les Armstrong
Les Armstrong was elected Mayor of Wilmot Township on October 25, 2010 and in his role as Mayor, is also a member of Waterloo Regional Council. Prior to his election as Mayor, Les was a member of Wilmot Township Council for 16 years where he served on numerous committees, boards and organizations including Finance and Employment Committee, Public Works Committee, Fire and Emergency Committee, Wilmot Agricultural Fair Board, New Hamburg Parks Board, Wilmot Healthy Community Coalition and Castle Kilbride Advisory Committee .
The son of two WWII Royal Canadian Navy veterans, Les was raised in Southern Ontario.
Les spent five years with the Royal Canadian Navy - four years aboard the HMCS St. Croix as an engineer. He then joined the Waterloo Regional Police Force and served as an officer for 13 years where he worked out of Division 1-A New Hamburg for his last 10 years on the force. After policing, his enjoyment in working with the public led him to work in Real Estate, as a taxi, school bus and tow truck operator, and, at the License office which he has managed for the past 10 years.
Les and his wife Deborah have lived in New Hamburg since 1978. They have two sons - Mark and Bradley (deceased) and two grandchildren.
Les is a 20-year member of the New Hamburg Legion and has served two terms on the Executive Board.
