Sean Strickland was re-elected Regional Councillor representing the City of Waterloo on October 27, 2014.
Sean first sought public office in 1993 when he was elected to the Waterloo Regional District School Board as a Trustee. Sean then served as a City of Waterloo Councillor from 1997 to 2000 and Waterloo Regional Councillor for four terms - 1997-2000, 2000-2003, 2006-2010 and 2010-2014. Sean did not seek re-election to Regional Council in 2003 due to his candidacy in the provincial election.
As Regional Councillor, Sean serves on all standing committees of council. He chaired Community Services Committee during the 2000-2003,2006-2010 and 2010-2014 Council terms. In addition to his standing committee responsibilities, Sean has been active on many other Regional committees, project teams, studies and working groups over the years - more recently - Economic Development & Promotion Committee, Audit Committee, Jack Young Civic Award Committee, Region of Waterloo History Museum Steering Committee, Grand River Conservation Authority, Long Term Budget Strategy working group, Regional Development Charges working group, Regional Transportation Master Plan, Waterloo Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade, Well W5 Upgrade EA, and the RGMS Steering Committee.
Sean is a life long resident of Kitchener-Waterloo and resides in Waterloo with his wife and two children. Sean attended St. Jerome's High School in Kitchener and graduated from Kitchener Collegiate Institute. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree, Political Science, from the University of Waterloo. He has also completed the Master Manager program at Wilfrid Laurier University and has attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Sean has been extensively involved in the community throughout his life. He served as the executive director of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region from 1990 to 2003 and was active on the Executive of the Ontario Association and Canadian Association of Food Banks. He is also the proud recipient of the Canada 125 Medal for Community Service. He has served on numerous community boards and committees including the Highland-Stirling Community Group, Catholic Family Counselling Centre, Wilfrid Laurier University Board, Project Lift Board and the Grand River Hospital Board.
In addition to his numerous community commitments and experience Sean enjoys coaching minor soccer and hockey.
