Our Hiring Process

Where can I find out about currently available positions at the Region?

All current openings are posted under Careers, Job Opportunities section of our website.  The list is updated daily. To receive automatic notification of all new posted positions, we encourage you to subscribe to the RSS feed located at the bottom of the career opportunities page.  You can also find our current openings under the Careers section on the Region's Facebook page. 

 

What is an RSS feed?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) allows users to subscribe to frequently updated content, such as news headlines, blogs or job postings. It is designed to be interpreted and displayed by a news reader (email) application such as Outlook Express, Hotmail or Yahoo.

 

How do I use RSS?

To set it up, click on the orange button. The page that follows will display the URL of the RSS feed. Copy and paste the URL that appears in the location bar into your news reader (email account). The RSS feed will then display regular job search updates for you.

 

 How do I apply for a job?

We strongly recommend that you apply online. Within a few minutes of sending the application, you  will receive an email confirming that your application was received. If you do not receive a confirmation, you should contact 519-575-4400. Alternatively, you may submit a detailed resume and cover letter to Human Resources before 4:30 p.m. on the closing date of the posting.

 

Can I apply for more than one job?

Yes. However, a separate resume and application must be submitted for each position.

 

If a job I applied for becomes available again, do I have to reapply?

Yes. A separate application is required for each competition/posting. If the job is advertised again with the same posting/competition number, it means previous applications probably did not pass the screening or selection stage. If the posting/competition number is different, it is a new opportunity and you must apply again.  If you were interviewed for the same position within the last 12 months, we will bring your previous score forward into the new competition if you reapply.

Please note that if you were previously unsuccessful in an interview process, the Region reserves the right to exclude your application for subsequent related positions.

 

What process do you use to select candidates?

Our processes will vary depending on the position and may include testing (used to evaluate an individual's technical skills related to the job), telephone interviews, in-person interviews and references.  Other factors such as police records checks, driver's abstracts and physical agility testing may also be included depending on the position.

How do you decide who will be invited for an interview or tesing?

Resumes are generally screened within five to 10 days of the application deadline. The Hiring Manager, working with a Human Resources Associate, uses pre-determined criteria to decide who will be interviewed.  

 

How soon will I hear? Will I be contacted if I was not chosen for an interview/test?

Selected candidates are generally contacted within a week of the application screening and interviewed within the following 5 to 10 days. Due to the volume of applications, people are not notified if they did not pass the screening process.

 

How will I be contacted about an interview/test?

Typically you will be contacted by email.  We recommend that you also check your junk email folder in the event that the Region's email gets automatically redirected to your junk folder.  In some instances we may also contact you by phone. 

What can I expect in a test?

The type of test will vary depending on the position.  Generally, the test will evaluate your technical competence related to the position.  An example would be computer testing such as Word or Excel for administrative related positions.

What can I expect in an interview?

You will likely be interviewed by a small group including the Hiring Manager, an HR representative and another manager or supervisor. A typical interview has 8 to 12 questions and usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. Our interview questions are behaviourally based so you can expect to provide specific examples from your past experiences; identify your role in a particular situation; the actions your took, and the outcome achieved. 

Please note that the Region reserves the right to verify any information on the resume and during the interview process.

What should I bring to the interview?

You will be advised what to bring when you are contacted to arrange the interview date and time. Typically you will be asked to bring the names of three past supervisors whom we can contact for a reference, as well as additional copies of your resume and proof of education, such as your original diploma or certificate.

 

Am I required to provide my current supervisor as a reference?

Yes. 

 

When should I expect to hear about a job?

 Depending on the number of interviews, a preliminary decision on hiring is usually made within five days of the last interview. During that time, we check references and make a verbal job offer. Typically, successful applicants start work within two to three weeks of the date of offer.

 

What are Driver's Abstract and/or CVOR Abstract requirements?

Any candidate for a Regional position which requires the operation of a vehicle must provide proof that they hold a valid Ontario driver's licence in the appropriate class and endorsement.  In addition, they must have an acceptable driver's abstract and/or Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration (CVOR) abstract.  To be acceptable, the abstract must have:

 

  • No more than two demerit points
  • No more than one convictions for the same or similar offence
  • No driving-related Criminal Code convictions
  • No "non-medical" or "administrative" licence suspensions in the preceding three years

Out-of-province candidates must provide a letter which authorizes the Fleet/Training Safety Advisor to access out-of-province abstracts covering the three years preceding the job application.

 

Any candidate for a Regional position which requires the operation of heavy equipment must hold a minimum "D" class driver's licence.

 

Any candidate for student positions requiring operation of vehicles must hold a minimum "G2" class licence and must have at least three years of driving experience (G1+G2).
