Transportation & Environmental Services

The department provides physical services and infrastructure necessary to support the Region's economic prosperity and quality of life. This includes operation and maintenance of water supply, wastewater treatment and solid waste management systems, the Regional road network, the Region of Waterloo International Airport, Grand River Transit conventional and specialized transit services and Rapid Transit.  The department also manages the planning, design and construction of the infrastructure and facilities to support these services.

Service is delivered through six operating divisions:

• Design and Construction - Manages the construction of infrastructure projects like Regional roads, bridges, water and wastewater treatment plants.
• Transportation - Provides safe and efficient movement of people and goods via the regional road network and the Region of Waterloo International Airport.
• Grand River Transit (GRT) - Delivers conventional transit services to the urban areas of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge and specialized transit throughout the Region.
• Rapid Transit - Is planning and implementing a rapid transit system for the Region's central transit corridor, connecting the urban areas of Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, to help meet future transportation needs.
• Water Services - Provides safe drinking water and treats wastewater through the operation, maintenance, protection and planning of water and wastewater infrastructure.
• Waste Management - Provides garbage collection, recycling and waste reduction programs and operates, maintains and plans the solid waste disposal facilities.
