Separated Cycling Network Pilot Project construction partially completed
Waterloo Region – Construction is now partially complete on the Region of Waterloo’s Separated Cycling Network Pilot Project. The network, measuring approximately 5 km, includes linkages along University Avenue, Columbia Street, King Street, Albert Street and Erb Street with connecting links along the Laurel Trail through Waterloo Park.
Due to the early arrival of cold temperatures, and wet and snowy conditions, the on-road intersection markings cannot be installed until warmer temperatures in Spring 2020.
In 2020, the Region will be installing the new pavement markings at intersections that will help cyclist move through the major intersections along the pilot network. Until then, cyclist can visit the Region’s webpage for suggestions on how to navigate these intersections without road markings.
Over the winter months, Regional staff will be gathering data on usage, maintenance and operation practices. An online engagement survey on the Region’s EngageWR.ca platform will be open for public input in early December 2019. The network may be adapted over the course of the project based on this input. At the end of the pilot, in 2021, Regional staff will report back to Regional Council to present findings of the pilot.
