Posted on Thursday September 19, 2024

Waterloo Region – The Township of Woolwich and the Region of Waterloo proudly celebrated the grand opening of the new Breslau Library Branch earlier this evening, marking a significant milestone for the growing community. The event brought together local leaders, community members, and partners to officially open the first new library branch in the Region of Waterloo in over 40 years.

The new library is located on the lower level of the Breslau Community Centre and offers over 10,000 books, free Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, public computers, and a variety of resources and programs for people of all ages.

Region of Waterloo Chair, Karen Redman, delivered opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of the new library in fostering community connections and lifelong learning. "This new branch is more than just a collection of books; it is a vibrant community hub where residents can gather, learn, and grow together,” said Chair Redman.

Mayor Sandy Shantz of Woolwich Township highlighted the significance of the project for the growing community of Breslau. "The new library is a vital addition to our community. It reflects our shared commitment to providing accessible and enriching services for everyone in Breslau,” Mayor Shantz stated.

The event also celebrated the collaborative efforts between the Region of Waterloo, the Township of Woolwich, and Breslau residents. The project was shaped by extensive community engagement, with local residents actively participating in surveys and engagement sessions to help define the library's vision.

“We are grateful to the residents who shared their input and ideas, which were essential in designing a library that reflects the needs and desires of the community,” said David Brenneman, Chief Administrative Officer of Woolwich Township. “With the approval of our new Strategic Plan, the Township is committed to creating central gathering places just like this so that our communities can thrive.”

The library’s features include a wide collection of books, as well as resources, such as DVDs, board games, hobby kits, and park passes. The library branch also includes flexible spaces for community meetings and events and is fully accessible, with a wheelchair lift, power doors, and adjustable computer tables.

The new Breslau Library Branch is one of 26 sites featured in this year's Doors Open Waterloo Region event on September 21, where visitors can explore this new space and many other noteworthy destinations across the region.

The Breslau Library Branch is now open to the public. The hours of operation are:
