Artwork featured on GRT bus conveys a message of strength in diversity during Black History Month
Waterloo Region – Artwork by a Wilfrid Laurier University student that shares a message of strength in diversity will circulate on a Grand River Transit bus throughout Waterloo Region in February to commemorate Black History Month.
The artwork was unveiled today during the Canadian Caribbean Association of Waterloo Region’s (CCAWR) Black History Month launch event at the University of Waterloo’s Federation Hall.
Artist Vanessa Nkansah-Okoree says her painting conveys that strength comes from unity, but unity doesn’t mean uniformity. "Diversity within the Black community is often overlooked, and my goal is to highlight the richness of that diversity, showcasing how we are united in our experiences but unique in our identities," says Nkansah-Okoree.
“I want to challenge the narrow, stereotypical portrayals of Black people and instead celebrate the depth of our identities. By embracing our differences and recognizing the importance of diverse representation, we can create a more inclusive, empowered community."
Nkansah-Okoree lives in Waterloo Region. Her parents moved from their home country, Ghana, in search of better opportunities for their children. Nkansah-Okoree is working on her master’s degree in health sciences with a focus on health equity for the Black community.
The bus wrap was organized by the CCAWR in partnership with the Region of Waterloo.
