Call for applications to fill vacant Regional Council seat opens today

Posted on Wednesday July 02, 2025

Waterloo Region – A Kitchener Regional Council seat left vacant after the passing of Councillor Kari Williams will be filled by issuing a call for applications that opens today (July 2).

“It is with a heavy heart that we have now declared this seat vacant,” says Regional Chair Karen Redman. “As Regional Council is required to welcome the next representative for Kitchener residents to Council, the application process chosen to fill this seat is democratic, inclusive, and also affordable for residents.”

The call for applications will be shared with the community, including advertisements in newspapers and on social media. Those interested in applying for the Council seat will need to submit an application that confirms their eligibility. To be eligible, you must:

  • Live in the Region of Waterloo or be an owner or tenant of land there, or be the partner of an owner or tenant;
  • Be a Canadian citizen; and
  • Be at least 18 years old.

Applications will be open until August 1 at 4 p.m. All applicants have the option to submit a personal statement of qualifications and will have an opportunity to present at a Special Council meeting on August 14 before a decision is made by Council.
