Let’s Roll: New carts-based collection starting tomorrow

Posted on Monday March 02, 2026

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo’s new cart-based collection service for garbage and organics launches tomorrow, Tuesday, March 3. This week, all households will receive both garbage collection in the new black carts and organics collection in the new green carts.

Confirm your collection day and schedule moving forward, as it may have changed. To find your collection day, you can visit www.regionofwaterloo.ca/carts and enter your address into the map. The results will show your collection day and what week you have each service. You can also use the Waste Whiz app, which will customize based on your address.

Next week, collection service will have the following frequency:

  • Garbage collection (black carts) will remain every other week
  • Organics collection (green carts) will remain weekly
  • Bulky item collection will move to once a month
  • yard waste collection will remain every other week, Spring to Fall

Recycling (blue box) is managed by Circular Materials and will move to every other week, opposite of garbage, starting this week. While Circular Materials updates their app, please use the Region’s website to confirm your recycling collection schedule. Miller Waste is contracted by Circular Materials to operate the residential recycling program and continues to deliver extra blue boxes. More information about the recycling program can be found here

The carts will be collected by a mechanical truck arm. Place the carts two feet apart with the arrows facing the street and the handles facing your home.  Ensure the lids are fully closed.

Now that curb-side collection is starting, residents are encouraged to reuse their old containers and green bins. They can be used for storage for soil, mulch, or other household goods. If residents cannot reuse their green bins, they can be dropped off at the Region’s Waste Management sites (925 Erb Road in Waterloo and 201 Savage Drive in Cambridge).

The Region will also be hosting drop off events in each city and township.

For more information on how to use the carts, what goes in them, and to confirm your collection day please visit regionofwaterloo.ca/carts.
