Spring rain barrel sale returns to Waterloo Region
Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo’s popular subsidized rain barrel sale is back this spring after a two-year hiatus by online pre-order only.
The Region is offering discounted $40 barrels to give people a convenient source of free outdoor water. Capturing and re-using rain conserves our community’s drinking water and helps control heavy rains that can create floods.
“Rain barrels are an easy way to start saving water at home,” said Elizabeth Clarke, Regional Councillor and member of the Source Water Protection Liaison Committee. “This is a great way to get the community engaged with water conservation and promotes environment and climate action. I'm excited the rain barrel sale is back on in 2022 and that residents will have access to an affordable way to save water.”
For the first time, all barrels will be sold ahead of time through the Region website. Customers can buy now at www.regionofwaterloo.ca/barrel, then pick up their rain barrel at the Fairview Park Mall parking lot near the ION station on May 5 or 6.
This change means no long, early-morning lines to get a rain barrel before they’re gone. Supplies are still limited, so interested buyers should act soon.
The Region began offering subsidized rain barrels in 2001 as part of its water conservation programs. The 200-litre barrels come with easy-to-use attachments including a hose to connect other barrels and removable mosquito screens.
A rain barrel can also lower water bills for residents in the City of Waterloo and the City of Kitchener. These cities offer a stormwater credit for homes with a rain barrel.
