Posted on Monday October 27, 2025

Waterloo Region – In collaboration with Porchlight Counselling and Addiction Services, the Region of Waterloo Library (RWL) is excited to introduce a new collection of Sensory Support Kits. The new kits promote comfort, emotional regulation, and stress relief in diverse environments. These curated kits were designed with a wide range of sensory needs in mind. They support individuals with a variety of sensory needs, including but not limited to those with Autism, ADHD, or other neurodivergences.

“Investing in the well-being of our community is one of the most impactful things we can do,” said Karen Redman, Chair of the Region of Waterloo. “These Sensory Support Kits and additional in-branch items help assist Region of Waterloo Library patrons in learning to navigate emotions, stress, and the world around them.”

Each Sensory Support Kit focuses on various sensory needs, offering a mix of tools encouraging relaxation and engagement:

  • Auditory: Rainmakers, echo and sound balls, piano mats, and sound buzzers
  • Tactile: Massagers, cushions, textured mats, and Twistle squish items
  • Visual: Dark dens, fibre optic lamps, and light-up toys
  • Body and Motion: Wiggle seats, balance boards, and weighted lap pads
  • Fidget: A range of fidget tools including water wigglers, tangles, and stress balls

This collection is supported by the Lyle S. Hallman Fund, held at Waterloo Region Community Foundation (WRCF). The funding makes it possible to broaden access to tools that aid in emotional self-regulation and sensory exploration.

“WRCF is pleased to be able to support initiatives that promote healthy development and emotional well-being, through a grant from the Lyle S. Hallman Fund,” said Eric Avner, President & CEO, Waterloo Region Community Foundation. “These sensory kits will help create more inclusive spaces where individuals feel supported and understood.”

RWL is also introducing Whazoodle Speaker Sidekicks, audio-first devices created for young learners. The speakers offer auditory experiences, supporting social and emotional development through play, rest, and exploration.

Sensory Support Kits are now available through your local library branch. To learn more about each kit or to place a hold, visit rwlibrary.ca today.
