Construction notice: Fountain Street & Maple Grove Road Roundabout City of Cambridge May–December 2024

About the project

Region of Waterloo is building a new roundabout at the intersection of Fountain Street and Maple Grove Road. We're widening the road, adding new multi-use trails on both sides, new streetlights, and installing a new watermain.

Timing — May–December 2024

Construction will be completed in stages from May through December 2024. The road will reopen over winter 2024/2025. Construction will start again for surface paving and project wrap up in spring 2025 and finish in early summer 2025.

Lane restrictions

No road closures are required this year, but lanes will be reduced to a single lane in each direction until December 2024.  Additional left turn lanes will be available at the intersection.The road will reopen over the winter 2024/2025. The intersection will be closed over a weekend in 2025 to complete paving of the new roundabout. Emergency services have been notified of the construction and lane reductions to minimize any disruptions to services.

Detour

No detour will be in place for this project until surface paving is scheduled in 2025.

Pedestrian access

The existing sidewalks in this area will remain accessible during the project. Pedestrians should follow the signs as they walk through the site.

Property and business access

Access to businesses and residences within the construction limits will be maintained to the greatest extent possible; however, disruptions will occur when construction activities are being completed directly adjacent to an entrance. The contractor will provide as much notice as possible to businesses and residences when construction activities are occurring adjacent to a property. If construction activities will make it such that you are unable to access your driveway for a short duration (including overnight), you will be directed to an alternate access.

There may be periods when traffic will need to travel on a gravel surface, as well as times when traffic will need to be controlled with flag persons. Temporary signage indicating businesses are “Open and Accessible” will be provided for all businesses within the active stage of construction.

Please plan for some delays and travel carefully through the construction zone.  We request that when driving or walking through and around the construction zone you follow and obey the construction traffic signage for your safety and the safety of the workers.
