Celebrating 50 years of the Region of Waterloo

Posted on Thursday January 19, 2023

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo has reached a milestone anniversary this year as it marks 50 years of helping to positively impact the lives of residents.

In 1973, the Region took its current shape, with a Regional government working together with three cities and four townships.

Over the past 50 years, the community has seen major changes in population, demographics, industry, technology and more. And as the community has evolved, Region of Waterloo services have also shifted and expanded to meet people’s needs.

To recognize the 50th anniversary, the Region of Waterloo will share the stories of 50 milestones. Throughout 2023, these milestones will highlight important changes in our community.

“The Region’s 50th anniversary is a chance to look at how our community has evolved and consider future opportunities,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman. “We have had many milestones to celebrate since 1973. Investing in clean drinking water infrastructure, launching our innovative Blue Box program, and creating the ION light rail system – the Region we call home has changed and improved in many ways.”

“History shows how much this community can accomplish together. We are building on that foundation to grow even better over the next 50 years.”

The 50 milestones will be released on the Region of Waterloo’s social media accounts and on our webpage approximately once a week. Follow along on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
