Region announces $8.9 million in funding for affordable housing project in Kitchener

Waterloo Region – Today, at a groundbreaking celebration, the Region announced $8.9 million in funding to create 41 affordable housing units in Kitchener.

The Indwell project with St. Peter’s Lutheran Church (49 Queen Street North) will repurpose under-used classroom and programming space into much-needed supportive affordable housing. Located on the ION corridor, the site also provides close access to transit and local amenities.

“The St. Peter’s project is an innovative and important increase in affordable housing for our community,” said Karen Redman, Chair of the Region of Waterloo. “Thank you to our partners, including St. Peter’s Church, Indwell, the Ontario Government and the City of Kitchener for ensuring that we can deliver shovel-ready projects as part of Regional Council’s affordable housing plan.”

The $8.9 million comes from the Region’s Strategic Investment Fund for affordable housing and forms part of the Region’s Building Better Futures initiative.

Occupancy is currently anticipated in spring 2024.
