Region of Waterloo pilots pedestrian safety enhancements at roundabouts

Posted on Wednesday July 09, 2025

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo will trial new safety measures at three roundabouts to enhance crosswalk safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Construction begins later this month.

Enhancements will be located at:

  • Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street North, Cambridge with button-activated flashing lights
  • Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road, Kitchener with raised crosswalks
  • Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard, Waterloo with button-activated flashing lights and raised crosswalks

The locations were chosen based on pedestrian volumes, collision history, having multiple lanes and geographic distribution. Roundabouts have been used in the Region for more than two decades, enhancing traffic flow and minimizing serious collisions. Prioritizing pedestrian and cyclist safety ensures everyone feels confident using roundabouts.

"These enhancements are designed to safeguard our most vulnerable road users while aligning with our climate and growth goals. We look forward to receiving feedback from the community on these initiatives, as it will be crucial in guiding future decisions about roundabout construction and retrofits," said Colleen James, Chair of the Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Committee.

A survey will be available on EngageWR following construction, seeking feedback on the changes. A report with recommendations will be presented to Regional Council in 2026.

The project responds to Regional Council direction to undertake work to improve pedestrian safety. It also furthers the Region’s strategic priority of Climate Aligned Growth.
