New carts-based collection rolling out March 3

Posted on Tuesday February 24, 2026

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo’s new cart-based collection service for garbage and organics is launching on Tuesday, March 3. All households receiving waste collection from the Region will receive both garbage and organics collection in the first week to ensure everyone has a fresh start, and then will receive the following frequency:

  • Garbage collection (black carts) will remain every other week
  • Organics collection (green carts) will remain weekly
  • Bulky item collection will move to once a month
  • Yard waste collection will remain every other week, Spring to Fall
  • Recycling (blue box) is now managed by Circular Materials and will move to every other week, opposite of garbage

Residents are encouraged to confirm their collection day, as it may be changing. To find your collection day, you can visit www.regionofwaterloo.ca/carts and enter your address into the map. The results will show your collection day and what week you have each service. You can also use the Waste Whiz app, which will customize based on your address.

“We are excited to get rolling and launch the new carts-based collection program for garbage and organics,” said Colleen James, Regional Councillor and Chair of the Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Committee. “Modernizing our collection service is the next step in creating a more efficient waste management program.”

The carts will be collected by a mechanical truck arm. Place the carts 2 feet apart with the arrows facing the street and the handles facing your home.  Ensure the lids are fully closed.
