Region’s Long-Term Waste Management Strategy aims to protect people and the planet

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo is updating its Long-term Waste Management Strategy to address our growing community's evolving waste management needs and support sustainable and affordable waste management practices.

“Updating this crucial plan will give us a roadmap for what the community will need in the future to ensure we continue to provide Waterloo Region with efficient, sustainable, and environmentally responsible waste management,” said Colleen James, Regional Councillor and Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Chair.

This strategy will set up a framework for managing waste over the next 25 years through minimizing environmental impacts, managing waste sustainably and fiscally responsibly, fostering a circular economy, aligning with provincial and federal regulations, improving efficiencies, and encouraging public awareness.

The strategy will include residential, commercial, industrial, and hazardous waste and is anticipated to be completed by spring 2026.

“As we launch this strategy, we want to hear from residents and invite them to share their thoughts on waste, from what we collect to how we divert waste from our landfill, what it looks like for the region today, and where we want to take waste management in the future,” said Tracy Annett, senior engineer, Waste Management at the Region of Waterloo.  “We’ll have engagement opportunities throughout the development of the strategy, and we welcome everyone’s input.”

We have two public meetings scheduled, one for May 14 at 6 p.m., and one on May 15 at 1 p.m. Residents can register to attend these meetings through EngageWR.ca/LTWMS. Project information is available at regionofwaterloo.ca/LTWMS.
