Region set to roll out waste carts in March 2026
Waterloo Region – In March 2026, the Region of Waterloo will roll out cart-based waste collection for garbage and organics for easier, cleaner, and more efficient collection.
“We’re taking a big step forward in modernizing how we collect waste,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman. “Cart-based collection has been shown to keep waste more secure from animals and pests. This is a smart investment in our community and our shared environment.”
A green cart for organics and a large black cart for garbage will be delivered to residents before collection starts in March.
If you live in an apartment/condo building or housing complex that does not currently receive Regional waste collection, you’ll continue with your current waste management services. The Region's change to cart-based collection is only for properties that receive Region waste services.
If you are a tenant in a 2–6 unit property, only the property owner can order the number and size of carts required.
There is an option to choose a smaller black cart; residents can make that choice now, until September 5, 2025, online at regionofwaterloo.ca/carts. They can also call the Region’s Service First Contact Centre at 519-575-4400 to make their selection.
Residents will be asked to use the black cart they receive for about six months. If, after that time, residents want to size up or down, they can request a one-time exchange, at no cost, starting in fall 2026.
To help residents decide what size of carts work best for their households, black and green carts are on display at various locations across the region, and the Carts Team is at events in the community all summer. Visit EngageWR.ca/carts for a listing of locations.
Residents are encouraged to ask questions at EngageWR.ca/carts and to download the Waste Whiz app for collection changes, sorting, and updates.
