Region of Waterloo advancing critical local priorities with Provincial Cabinet Ministers
Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo is advancing key housing-enabling infrastructure, transportation, and community safety and wellbeing priorities, through meetings with Provincial and Federal partners in Ottawa.
Today, Regional Chair and Chair of the Mayors and Regional Chairs of Ontario, Karen Redman, co-led a meeting with Ontario’s Big City Mayors where the group was joined by the Provincial Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, the Honourable Rob Flack, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Federal Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Jennifer McKelvie.
Chair Redman emphasized the roles Regions, Cities and Townships play in building the infrastructure to support the homes needed in Ontario and across Canada, while also highlighting the need for sustainable, dedicated funding for all municipalities as demand for service and infrastructure pressures grow.
“Houses need infrastructure; toilets that flush, roads that connect, and transit that moves people,” said Region of Waterloo Chair Karen Redman. “The Region of Waterloo is known for getting things done. However, without this foundation, communities can’t further grow to meet our housing needs. The solution is long-term, predictable infrastructure and service funding that supports each community’s unique needs.”
A delegation of Region of Waterloo Councillors will be in Ottawa for the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s (AMO) annual conference, August 17-20, 2025.
Further meetings with Ministers will take place over the next two days as the Region of Waterloo seeks commitments to deliver critical housing enabling infrastructure, expanded transit, intimate partner violence and gender-based violence prevention initiatives, further mental health and addictions strategies, and economic development partnerships.
