Waterloo Region's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) consistently achieves annual growth greater than two per cent and growth is projected to be within the Top 5 metropolitan areas in Canada. The region's growth is supported by various factors, including the construction of ION Light Rail Transit, increased business investment and population growth.

The value of building permits has experienced strong growth in the last decade. Much of this growth is attributed to the ION LRT project, job growth and evolving demographics which is supporting development along the Region's Central Transit Corridor.
