Nicotine Pouches
Nicotine Pouches are small bags that are placed between the cheek and gum. They contain nicotine, flavourings, sweeteners and plant-based fibres. Nicotine is an addictive chemical that can increase blood pressure and heart rate, damage cells in arteries, and contribute to heart diseases. Nicotine pouches should not be used under the following circumstances:
- Nicotine pouches are meant for use by adults 18 years and above. Always keep nicotine products out of the reach of children and teens.
- Do not use if you are an occasional smoker, non-smoker or non-nicotine user.
- Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing a child. If you think you are pregnant, stop using nicotine pouches at once and see your doctor.
- Not suitable for use by persons: allergic/sensitive to nicotine and any other ingredients; who should avoid nicotine for medical reasons; who take prescription medicine.
Health Canada has introduced new measures for the sale of new and emerging Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRTs), such as nicotine pouches, to reduce the appeal of, access to, and use of these products by young people for recreational purposes. There are concerns that nicotine pouches are leading to recreational use by people who do not smoke, especially among young people under 18.
On August 28, 2024, the Federal Government imposed new restrictions on nicotine pouches, including:
- Nicotine pouches can only to be sold from behind a pharmacy counter
- Flavours like Berry Frost and Tropic Breeze are banned, except menthol and mint.
Do not buy or use any unauthorized nicotine pouches. We encourage you to submit any future complaints to Health Canada using the Health Product Complaint Form (FRM-0317).The form and more information are available online: Health Product Complaint Form
