Volunteers, Placements, and Careers

There are many volunteer, career, and student placement opportunities in Seniors' Services.

Volunteer

We accept adult and youth volunteers over the age of 14.

Why volunteer

Volunteers are valued members of our community who help in all areas of Seniors' Services. Every year they give over twenty-one thousand hours of their time to support older adults!

Your skills and experience can have a positive impact on someone's life. Your support will:

  • Support people when they need it most
Positions available

We provide specialized training to give volunteers the knowledge they need to work with older adults in a health care setting. We have opportunities to suit all personalities and schedules, including:

One-to-One Resident Support

Become a friendly visitor, a walking buddy, computer coach, assist people at meal time or support an individual at the end of their life. 

Recreation Therapy Support

Assist with weekly programs such as baking, bingo, crafts, pub night, woodworking, music and more!

Resident Assistants and Appointment Companions

Accompany the people who live at Sunnyside Home to chapel, hairdressing, clinics and events or to medical appointments in the community

Fundraising

Help raise money to benefit Seniors' Services. Get involved with the Sunnyside Foundation or assist in the gift shop or the tuck shop.

Clerical Support

Provide clerical assistance with projects.

Community Alzheimer Program Assistants

Assist with daily activities in the Community Alzheimer Programs, an adult day program for persons with Alzheimer Disease or related dementias. Morning, afternoon and evening positions available seven days per week at the Kitchener, Waterloo or Cambridge site. 

Supportive Housing

Assist with recreational activities in Supportive Housing including outings, BBQ's, gardening and scrapbooking groups.

Please note that adult volunteers will need a police records check and two-step TB skin test. After you apply, you will receive more information on these requirements.

We will also arrange a time for you to meet with the Volunteer Coordinator on Sunnyside campus.

Student Placements

Why request a placement 
Seniors' Services provides opportunities for students in high school, college or university to take part in practical, hands-on learning. We are looking for energetic people with a keen interest in developing relationships with older adults.

We offer unpaid student placements in many areas, including:

  • Personal Support Worker
  • Nursing
  • Recreation
  • Music Therapy
  • Social Work
