Council Vacancy

At the Special Council Meeting on August 14, 2025, the Regional Municipality of Waterloo appointed the following individual to fill the vacant Kitchener position on Regional Council effective August 15, 2025:
Joseph Gowing, Kitchener
At the Regional Council Meeting on June 25, 2025 the following motion was approved:
That the Regional Municipality of Waterloo declare the Regional Councillor – Kitchener seat, formerly held by Kari Williams, vacant in accordance with the Municipal Act, 2001.
And that the Regional Municipality of Waterloo selects option 1B, and the associated process, as outlined in report PDL-CAS-25-011, dated June 25, 2025, as the method for filling the vacant Regional Councillor – Kitchener seat.
Update - At the Regional Council Meeting on April 23, 2025 - Regional Councillor Matt Rodrigues signed the declaration of office.
At the March 4, 2025 Special Council meeting the following motion was approved:
That the Regional Municipality of Waterloo selects option 1A, and the associated process, as outlined in report PDL-CAS-25-004, dated March 4, 2025 as the method for filling the vacant Regional Councillor – Kitchener seat
1A - Appoint from the 2022 Election Candidates - Matt Rodrigues
The Regional Municipality of Waterloo declared the Regional Council – Kitchener seat formerly held by Rob Deutschmann vacant in accordance with the Municipal Act, 2001; on January 29, 2025 as outlined in report PDL-CAS-25-003.
And that the Regional Clerk has been directed to prepare a report outlining options for filling the vacancy to be presented at a Special Council meeting on March 4, 2025.
In accordance with the Act, Council has 60 days from the declaration, until March 30, 2025, the options include to either:
a) Appoint a person to fill the vacancy; or
b) Pass a by-law requiring a by-election be held to fill the vacancy.
