Sandy Shantz was re-elected Mayor of Woolwich Township in 2018 and, in her role as Mayor, is also a member of Regional Council.

During her first term, Sandy sat on a number of Regional Committees and Boards, including Standing Committees of Council as well as the Grand River Conservation Authority, Regional Library Board, Kissing Bridge Advisory Committee, Airport Master Plan Committee and the Waterloo Region Community Housing Advisory Committee. In addition, as mayor she sits on the Waterloo North Hydro Board and Chairs the Remediation Advisory Committee. This term she will sit on the Police Services Board in lieu of the Grand River Conservation Authority.

Sandy believes it is important to establish and strengthen a culture of respect between local government and businesses, volunteers, and other levels of government. She has met with volunteer groups and with politicians at all levels of government in order to foster good working relationships.

Sandy has lived in Woolwich for the past 30 years, and has a liberal arts background with a focus in Business, Psychology, and Religious Studies. Sandy began her political career in 1997 as a Trustee for the Waterloo Region District School Board where she served until 2003, including a term as Board Chair.

Sandy also served her community as a member of Woolwich Township Council from 2006 to 2010. She has held executive-level positions in education, recreation, church and health care. Most recently, Sandy chaired the Woolwich Community Services Capital Fundraising campaign, which raised over $1 million for a new facility.

Sandy lives in Elmira with her husband Brian, and has three grown sons -- Adam, Brad and Luke, as well as four grandchildren.

Sandy has been appointed by Regional Council to the following Committees, Boards, Project Teams, Working Groups and Studies:

Standing Committees

  • Administration and Finance
  • Budget
  • Community Services
  • Library
  • Planning and Works

Advisory Committees

  • Kissing Bridge Trailway Advisory Committee

Other Appointments

  • Airport Master Plan Implementation Project
  • Waterloo Regional Police Services Board
