Wastewater Surveillance

The provincial Wastewater Surveillance Initiative that is operated by the Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks will be wound down by July 31, 2024. The last update to Region of Waterloo Public Health’s Wastewater Surveillance Dashboard will be on July 19, 2024. The Public Health Agency of Canada’s wastewater surveillance data includes sampling sites in Ontario. This information is available on the Government of Canada’s COVID-19 wastewater monitoring dashboard

The wastewater surveillance dashboard provides information on the evidence of COVID-19, flu (influenza A and B) and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus A and B) circulating in our community.

The University of Waterloo and Region of Waterloo have partnered to sample wastewater from facilities in Cambridge and Kitchener. Wastewater samples are collected five days a week in Kitchener and three days a week in Cambridge. Samples are tested for fragments of viruses that are shed by both asymptomatic and symptomatic people in wastewater.

This dashboard is updated weekly on Fridays at 1:30 p.m.
