Environmental Sustainability

The Region of Waterloo embraces environmental considerations in all of its decisions. Ensuring clean air, water and land is important to maintaining a healthy Waterloo Region for our future. For information about environmental-related programs and projects at the Region, visit the following areas:

Community Environmental Fund

The Community Environmental Fund was established in 2011 to provide financial support to community environmental stewardship projects. Community members and organizations can apply for funding to carry out projects that protect, promote and enhance our natural environment. There are two funding streams, stewardship and sustainability.

Stewardship grants are for projects focused on: enhancing and restoring natural areas; naturalizing landscapes; acquiring ecologically significant natural areas; public education/awareness initiatives related to environmental stewardship; or research related to environmental stewardship.

Sustainability grants are for projects focusing on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) and/or air emissions, increasing energy conservation or efficiency and/or, reducing or diverting waste. Also eligible for sustainability grants are public education/awareness initiatives which promote long term behavioural change related to environmental sustainability or research related to environmental sustainability.

Applying for the Fund

The application period for the 2023 Region of Waterloo’s Community Environmental Fund is now closed. Staff will be reviewing applications for stewardship and sustainability projects and making recommendations regarding funding to Regional Council in the upcoming weeks. Applicants may be contacted for further information during this time. All applicants will be notified regarding the final status of their application after the review period is completed.
