Have your say on the future of Waterloo Region waste management

Waterloo Region – Waste reduction is important for everyone. The Region of Waterloo wants to hear from you on ways totransform waste management practices in Waterloo Region.

The Region of Waterloo is currently updating the Long-term Waste Management Strategy (LTWMS) to meet the evolving needs of the growing community, while supporting sustainable and affordable waste management practices.

“This plan will inspire and direct the future of how we handle waste in Waterloo Region,” said Colleen James, Regional Councillor and Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development Chair. “The community's input is crucial as we aim for efficient, sustainable, and environmentally responsible waste management.”

Potential actions to enhance and expand waste services have been identified through the project for the community to consider. These actions include:

  • Expanding Region waste services to cover large apartment buildings (All buildings with more than seven units)
  • Creating a mobile drop-off service to improve accessibility beyond curbside collection
  • Establishing a “Community Waste Ambassador” volunteer group to support waste diversion education

The LTWMS will include residential, commercial, industrial, and hazardous waste and is anticipated to be completed by spring 2026.

Residents are invited to review all draft actions and submit their feedback through the project surveys available at EngageWR.ca/LTWMS. More information can be found at regionofwaterloo.ca/LTWMS.

The surveys will close on Friday, Oct. 3, 2025.
