Construction notice: King Street, Waterloo, April–June 2025

University Avenue to Central Street

About the project

The Region of Waterloo is repairing King Street between University Avenue West and Central Street. We are completing concrete repairs, underground infrastructure repairs, surface asphalt paving and re-painting the crosswalks.

Timing — starts April 28

Construction will begin on Monday, April 28 and be completed in a series of stages until early June 2025.

Lane reductions and closures

Two-way traffic will be maintained on King Street with lane reductions during the concrete work, underground repairs and line painting.

For paving, King Street will be closed to through traffic overnight from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. from May 23 to May 29, not including the weekend.

Detours

Alternate travel routes around the work area are available on Albert Street, Regina Street and Weber Street. There may be periods during construction when traffic will be directed by crews, as well as times when traffic will need to travel on a gravel surface.

Grand River Transit (GRT) will temporarily relocate Route 7, from King Street to Regina Street while the improvements are taking place. Visit www.grt.ca/detours for updates.

Emergency Services (Police, Fire, Paramedics) are notified of the timing of road closures, access and construction detours to minimize disruptions to service.

Pedestrian access

Pedestrians should follow signs as they walk through the site. Some of the intersection ramps are being replaced and temporary detours / walkways around the work zone will be required at times.

Property and business access

Every effort will be made to maintain access to residential and business driveways in the construction area during working hours (7 a.m.–7 p.m.). For night paving, construction activities may temporarily impact access to entrances. We will install signs and provide notice of road closures in advance as much as possible.

Please plan for some delays and travel carefully in the construction area. We request that when driving, walking or cycling through and around the construction zone you follow and obey the construction traffic signage for your safety and for the safety of the workers.
