About the project

The Region of Waterloo is improving three existing roundabouts in Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo. This work is part of the roundabout pedestrian safety pilot that is trialing three different crosswalk safety features to help anyone walking or rolling feel more safe.

Three options will be explored at three locations. Each pilot location will also include improved lighting and curb and storm sewer upgrades for better drainage. The locations include:

Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road in Kitchener (raised crosswalks)
Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street North in Cambridge (flashing lights)
Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard/Erbsville Road in Waterloo (flashing lights and raised crosswalks)

Timing

Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road: July 14–September 2025

Franklin Boulevard and Bishop Street North: July 28–August 8 2025

Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard/Erbsville Road: August 11–September 19 2025

Lane reductions and closures

During the construction of each roundabout, two-way traffic will be maintained. There may be times when lanes will be reduced and traffic will be controlled by flag persons.

The Erb Street West and Ira Needles Boulevard/Erbsville Road roundabout will be closed for two nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Advance notice of that closure and the detour will be provided.

Please plan for some delays and travel carefully in the construction zone. We request that when driving or walking through and around the construction zone you follow and obey the construction traffic signage for your safety and for the safety of the workers.
