Next week, rehabilitation work at the historic West Montrose Covered Bridge will reach a significant milestone as crews prepare to carefully raise the entire bridge using hydraulic jacks. The bridge will be lifted onto the temporary steel support system installed in June, allowing crews to continue repairing and strengthening the existing wooden trusses. 

Given the bridge’s age, heritage significance, and unique construction, the rehabilitation has required detailed planning, specialized restoration techniques, and careful adjustments as conditions are uncovered during construction. The project team has adapted to existing site conditions, severe weather events, challenges with procuring and fabricating specialized materials, and necessary refinements to the temporary support system. 

The rehabilitation is now expected to continue into spring 2027, with the goal of completing the work and reopening the bridge at that time. The project team continues to work closely with the contractor to identify opportunities to accelerate the remaining work where possible.
