Great Lakes Helicopter breaks ground on new expansion in Waterloo Region

Waterloo Region - Great Lakes Helicopter (GLH) is proud to mark the groundbreaking of a new hangar facility as part of the second phase of expansion, a major milestone in the organization’s continued growth and long-term vision for aviation in Ontario. The new space, at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF), will support expanded operations, workforce development, and investment in advanced aviation and aerial technology, building on the group’s strong foundation in pilot training, maintenance, and specialized aviation services.

“This groundbreaking reflects the dedication of the entire Great Lakes Helicopter team and our shared vision for the future of Canadian aviation,” said Chad McIntosh, Owner and Managing Director of Great Lakes Helicopter. “This investment is about more than expanding our facilities—it’s about creating opportunities for the next generation of Canadian pilots and aviation professionals while fostering innovation across our industry. We are committed to strengthening tourism, supporting emerging aerospace technologies, and working alongside industry, educators, and government to ensure the Waterloo Region continues to grow as a centre for aviation, aerospace, and defence.”

Comprised of Great Lakes Helicopter, Rotor Services Limited, GLH Drones, and heliSIX, the group has evolved over the past two decades from a pilot training school into a diversified aviation services organization supporting training, maintenance, commercial operations, and emerging aerial technologies. Under new ownership, the organization is bringing together local aviation enthusiasts and entrepreneurs with experience across multiple industries.

“Great Lakes Helicopter represents the kind of local investment and innovation that helps strengthen our economy,” said Regional Chair Karen Redman. “Their continued growth supports high-quality jobs and workforce development, while helping position our region as a leader in emerging technologies and next-generation transportation solutions.”

Moving towards their long-term vision, GLH looks to become the leading regional aviation and aerial technology platform. The organization is focused on strengthening Ontario’s role in pilot training and workforce development, while also aiming to expand commercial aviation services, advance drone and autonomous aviation applications, and support innovation in remote access, emergency response, and logistics.

By combining technical expertise, operational experience, and emerging technology, Great Lakes Helicopter is contributing to a stronger regional aviation ecosystem and helping position the region as a hub for future-focused aviation innovation.
