National Public Works Week celebrates service and community

May 18 to May 24, 2005, is National Public Works Week (NPWW); an extra opportunity for us to recognize our employees in Engineering and Environmental Services, and Transportation Services, who deliver essential services to our community every day.

  • Did you know that our Public Works teams:
  • Collected over 141,000 metric tonnes of curbside waste.
  • Care for over 37,000 trees.
  • Maintain over 1,660 intersections with 540 traffic signals plus stop signs.
  • Ensure the quality of over 57.4 million cubic meters of drinking water.
  • Treat over 64 million cubic metres of wastewater.
  • Process over 648,000 cubic metres of biosolids for use on agricultural lands and mine sites land reclamation.
  • Built over $3 billion in capital project infrastructure that keeps our community thriving.
  • Create and install close to 40,000 road signs.
  • Maintain over 2,500 kms of road and bike lanes.
  • Care for over 3,200 culverts.
  • Manage and service over 800 vehicles and equipment from across the Region.
  • Process about 40,000 work orders a year to get things done.
  • Support over 2,7000 housing units

This year’s NPWW theme — People, Purpose and Presence — highlights three cornerstone ideals that motivate public works professionals to serve in their communities.

Right here at home, these teams work to keep us connected to the places we need to be, the services that make our community thrive, and the programs that improve our quality of life every day…all done with care.

A big thank you to our Public Works teams!
