New system will help paramedics respond faster when seconds count
Waterloo Region – People across the Region of Waterloo who need urgent medical help will get it even faster with the December 4 launch of a new Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS).
This new software system is ready to help send Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services to the most life-threatening emergencies first. When someone calls 9-1-1 for a medical emergency, the Medical Priority Dispatch System helps the dispatcher determine how serious the situation is and what kind of help is needed.
If paramedics are in high demand and your call is not urgent, you may wait longer. In that case, Ambulance Communication Officers check on you by calling back to make sure you are safe. If your condition changes, you can also call 9-1-1 again to give an update.
“Our paramedics have received comprehensive training on the changes with MPDS,” said Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services Chief John Riches. “Additionally, new mobile software installed in our ambulances will provide paramedics with faster, more efficient access to critical information while responding to calls.”
The rollout on December 4, 2025, includes the Region of Waterloo, Dufferin County, County of Wellington and City of Guelph. The Ministry of Health has already introduced MPDS to many Central Ambulance Communications Centres including Ottawa, Mississauga, Kenora, Thunder Bay, Renfrew, Georgian, Kingston, Oshawa and other municipalities. The Ministry plans to expand the system’s usage province wide.
