Region of Waterloo Library expands accessibility collection with new Adaptive Gaming Kits

Waterloo Region – Region of Waterloo Library (RWL) is expanding its accessible collection with new adaptive gaming controllers and gaming kits, giving patrons more ways to enjoy gaming in a comfortable and accessible way.

Patrons can now explore adaptive gaming at RWL using the Hori Flex Controller for Nintendo Switch and the Xbox Adaptive Controller, both of which are compatible with the library’s console systems. For additional flexibility, both adaptive controller kits can also be paired with RWL’s Adaptive Gaming Kit, which includes extra buttons and triggers to support a wider range of play styles and accessibility needs.

Designed to work with a range of devices, the adaptive gaming equipment allows users to connect external supports such as switches, buttons and joysticks to create a customized controller experience. Developed to help bring the joy of gaming to more people, the adaptive controllers were intentionally designed to assist individuals affected by Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Cerebral Palsy and other physical challenges.

“Region of Waterloo Library is committed to creating accessible and inclusive services that meet people where they are,” said Regional Chair, Karen Redman. “By offering adaptive gaming controllers and kits, the library is helping remove barriers and giving more patrons and families the opportunity to enjoy accessible gaming in the comfort of their own homes.”

By offering adaptive gaming options, Region of Waterloo Library is helping ensure more patrons can participate in gaming experiences that are welcoming, engaging and inclusive.

This initiative reflects RWL’s ongoing commitment to accessible services for the community. The library recently introduced sensory support kits designed to promote comfort, emotional regulation and stress relief in a variety of environments. These curated kits were developed with a wide range of sensory needs in mind and can support individuals with diverse needs, including but not limited to people with Autism, ADHD and other neurodivergences.

Through accessible technology, inclusive programming and sensory supports, Region of Waterloo Library continues to create welcoming spaces where everyone can participate, connect and belong.
