Region welcomes new leader to expedite infrastructure solutions

Waterloo Region – On September 8, the Region of Waterloo will welcome a new Commissioner of Water and Wastewater Services to lead the team and continue to accelerate solutions to the water capacity constraint in the Mannheim Service Area. 

Ishtiaque Tunio, P.Eng., PE, PMP, is a senior public-sector executive with more than 20 years of experience leading the delivery of critical public systems including water supply and wastewater in highly regulated environments. Mr. Tunio also has experience in addressing complex urban challenges including water system capacity, municipal utility coordination and infrastructure renewal. 

"We are excited to announce that Ishtiaque Tunio is joining us here at the Region of Waterloo as Commissioner of Water and Wastewater Services," said Chief Administrative Officer Darshpreet Bhatti. "In addition to his experience delivering water and wastewater projects at multiple Ontario municipalities, Ishtiaque has extensive experience on some of North America’s most complex infrastructure projects such as Union Station's Rail Corridor program and the Gordie Howe International Bridge. I look forward to Ishtiaque joining the team to work in collaboration with our many partners as we expedite solutions that add more water faster."

Mr. Tunio has held senior leadership roles with organizations including the City of Mississauga, the City of Ottawa, the Maryland Transportation Authority, Metrolinx, and the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. He holds a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto and is a Professional Engineer in Canada and the United States, as well as a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

Mr. Tunio will work alongside area municipalities, the province, and community leaders to continue to accelerate the infrastructure solutions needed to add more water capacity.
