Speed cameras in school zones across Waterloo Region no longer issuing tickets as of November 14, 2025

Waterloo Region – The Government of Ontario has passed Bill 56, Building a More Competitive Economy Act, 2025, which includes amendments to the Highway Traffic Act prohibiting the use of automated speed enforcement systems across the province. As a result of this new legislation, all municipalities must discontinue their speed camera programs. In accordance with these requirements, Waterloo Region ended its Municipal Speed Camera program and cameras ceased issuing tickets on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

The community can expect new provincially mandated school zone signage to be installed across the 28 school zones where speed cameras were in use.

What residents need to know:

  • The Region of Waterloo’s Municipal Speed Camera Program will no longer issue speeding tickets effective November 14, 2025, to comply with new legislation from the provincial government.
  • Tickets issued on or before November 13 remain valid. Speed camera tickets may be received in the mail on or after November 14, and vehicle owners are responsible for paying or disputing a ticket by the date indicated on the ticket.
  • Unpaid tickets are sent to the Ministry of Transportation. Outstanding fines will impact your ability to renew your vehicle license.
  • To pay or dispute a ticket, visit: www.regionofwaterloo.ca/app.
  • The Region is coordinating the removal of “Municipal Speed Camera In Use” signs and speed cameras on Regional and municipal roads. Speed cameras will remain in place temporarily to collect traffic speed data. No speeding tickets are being issued as of November 14, 2025.
  • A complete list of camera locations can be found at: https://gis.regionofwaterloo.ca/municipalspeedcameras
  • Regional school zones remain designated as community safety zones to protect children, pedestrians, and cyclists. Fines for speeding and other road safety offences are doubled when issued by Waterloo Region Police Services within these designated zones.

Following the posted speed limit remains one of the most effective ways to prevent vehicle collisions and improve safety for vulnerable road users. The Region urges all pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions and follow the rules of the road.
