Water capacity issue identified; no impact to water quality
Waterloo Region – Through on-going work and updates to the Water Supply Strategy, a water capacity issue has been identified within the Mannheim Service Area, which supplies water to Kitchener, Waterloo, and parts of Cambridge, Woolwich, and Wilmot.
While water monitoring reports have consistently shown significant capacity, a combination of factors, including aging infrastructure, lower levels of water in the system, and the pressures of rapid growth, are impacting water supply capacity.
This is strictly a quantity challenge within the Mannheim Service Area and does not affect drinking water quality. There are no current capacity impacts on residents, and no need to change water consumption habits.
The Region of Waterloo operates a complex water system that relies on a mix of source water from 100 wells and surface water from the Grand River. Water is supplied to all seven local municipalities after being treated at 50 treatment facilities.
A comprehensive third-party review is currently underway to confirm the extent of the capacity issue. In the interim, immediate steps have been taken to both expedite timelines for new infrastructure and repair aging assets, while engaging all partners to ensure a secure, sustainable water supply now and for the future.
The Region of Waterloo’s priority continues to be providing a safe, sustainable water supply now and in the future as we grow to a community of one-million residents by 2051.
More information will be provided as it becomes available. Residents can visit the Water Capacity Information Hub for the most up-to-date information.
