Water Conservation By-law in effect

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo’s annual Water Conservation By-law is in effect from May 31 to September 30. The by-law limits outdoor water use during peak-demand summer months to ensure we have enough water for critical needs like drinking and firefighting.

Residents and businesses on a municipal water supply can water lawns once a week, and trees, shrubs and gardens every other day, based on the last digit of their street address. Watering is only permitted on the assigned day for their address from 5:30 to 10 a.m. and 7 to 11 p.m. When planting new grass seed or laying sod, a temporary watering permit must be requested by contacting the Region of Waterloo.

“Drinking water is a top priority for our growing community and the by-law spreads out the water demands through the week to ensure we can supply everyone’s needs,” said Regional Councillor Colleen James, chair of the Sustainability, Infrastructure and Development committee. “Following the by-law is the best way for residents and businesses to do their part to protect our water supply.”
