Water recreational season brings a reminder to be mindful

Waterloo Region – As the weather warms up and water recreational season begins on the Grand River, the Region reminds residents to be cautious around dams.

Over the next few weeks, residents will see new warning and danger signs at multiple locations around the Hidden Valley Dam on the Grand River to advise water users of the dam. Additional buoys have also been installed to notify water users as they approach the dam.

The additional signs reflect a recent Public Safety Risk Assessment the Region completed to help identify risks and opportunities to mitigate those risks.

The Grand River has become a favourite pastime for residents, and these additional signs will support the growing number of water users as they enjoy recreational activities in and along the waterway.

Danger signs will also be placed along the railings at the dam and along the wingwalls, and warning and no-fishing signs will be posted on both the east and west shores of the area directly downstream of the dam.

The Hidden Valley Dam is critical infrastructure that ensures a consistent water supply to the Region’s communities. This intake supplies 20 per cent of the region’s drinking water.
