Waterloo Region – Beginning October 5, residents across the Region of Waterloo will have an opportunity to exchange their black garbage cart to the other size and will have the option to purchase additional green organics carts. 

Following the rollout of cart-based collection six months ago, many residents have a better sense of which cart will work best for their household. Residents who receive waste collection from the Region can request a one-time free garbage cart exchange between October 5 and 31. The black garbage carts can be exchanged between the two sizes:

• Small (120-litre) cart 
• Large default (240-litre) cart 

"The cart exchange program is all about giving residents options," said Olivia Kwok, Director of Waste Management. "Whether a household needs a larger cart, a smaller one, or an extra cart for organics, we're making it easier for residents to find the setup that fits their needs while helping reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill."

Residents can submit their cart exchange request online or by phone at 519-575-4400 beginning October 5. Residents participating in the program will be asked to leave their carts out in an accessible place on their property, where they will be manually exchanged for the requested size. Residents don't need to bring their carts in anywhere; the exchange will happen right at their homes.  

Also beginning on October 5, residents will be able to purchase additional green organics carts for $150 plus applicable taxes. The purchase program will be ongoing and is intended to provide greater flexibility for households that have more organics waste. Residents wishing to purchase an additional green cart can do so online at www.regionofwaterloo.ca/green-carts.
