Region of Waterloo Announces New Commissioner of Human Resource Services

Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo is pleased to announce Kate Konopka as the new Commissioner of Human Resources. As Interim Commissioner of Human Resources, Kate provided strong leadership to the department, ensuring stability and continuity for employees. 

“I am excited to officially welcome Kate to the role of Commissioner of Human Resources,” said Acting Chief Administrative Officer Mathieu Goetzke. “Kate’s leadership and experience will ensure that the Region of Waterloo continues its commitment to creating a resilient and future ready organization for all employees.” 

With a rich background in human resources, particularly in unionized environments within the public sector, Kate brings strong experience to the role in areas such as labour relations, conflict management, strategic employee relations and team building. 

“I look forward to continuing to work with the Human Resources team at the Region of Waterloo,” said Kate Konopka. “Every day, Region employees provide services and programs that residents depend on. I enjoy being part of such a dedicated, hardworking, and impactful team and look forward to the meaningful work ahead.” 

Kate joined the Region in 2021 and since then has fostered collaboration with leaders across the organization, advocated for the importance of meaningful union partnerships, and championed Regional values. 

Prior to joining the Region, Kate held the position of Manager of Employee Relations at Wilfrid Laurier University, where she worked for 18 years and was recognized as a collaborative leader.
