Construction notice: Westmount Rd. and Union Blvd. intersection improvements, City of Kitchener, September–October, 2024
About the project
The Region of Waterloo is improving the intersection of Westmount Road and Union Boulevard in Kitchener. We will be adding new traffic signals with push-buttons and countdown signals, resurfacing the pavement, painting pedestrian crosswalks, adding accessibility ramps and extending the traffic medians.
Timing — starts early September 2024
Construction will begin in September and be completed in a series of stages this fall.
Lane closures
Two-way traffic will be maintained on Westmount Road with lane reductions. Union Boulevard will be closed to traffic during construction.
Detour
There may be periods during construction when traffic will be directed by crews, as well as times when traffic will need to travel on a gravel surface. Alternate travel routes around Union Boulevard are available on Glasgow Street.
Please note Emergency Services (Police, Fire, Paramedics) are notified of the timing of road closures, access and construction detours to minimize disruptions to service.
Pedestrian access
Pedestrians should follow signs as they walk through the site. The intersection ramps are being replaced and temporary detours / walkways around the work area will be required at times.
Property and business access
Every effort will be made to maintain access to residential driveways in the construction area during working hours (7 a.m.–7 p.m.). Construction activities may temporarily impact access to entrances. We will provide notice of any interruption in advance as much as possible.
Please plan for some delays and travel carefully in the construction zone. We request that when driving or walking through and around the construction zone you follow and obey the construction traffic signage for your safety and for the safety of the workers.
