  • Region of Waterloo joins the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to advance new fiscal funding framework for municipalities Waterloo Region – Region of Waterloo Chair Karen Redman and Councillors joined the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) in Calgary as leaders unveiled the next steps in securing a new fiscal funding framework for municipalities.  In September, Chair Redman travelled to Ottawa for conversations with FCM, policy makers, and industry leaders to inform what a new fiscal funding framework should entail, and which priority areas would best support municipal challenges associated with growth.
  • Region shares preferred option for improvements on Victoria Street (King Street West to Weber Street West) Waterloo Region — The Region of Waterloo is making improvements to Victoria Street in Kitchener, from King Street West to Weber Street West, near the future Kitchener Central Transit Hub. This project focuses on high-quality multimodal connections, creating better first- and last-mile connections to the future Kitchener Central Transit Hub by creating infrastructure for walking, cycling, and transit.
  • 2023 Youth Impact Survey Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity data now available Waterloo Region – The Children and Youth Planning Table (CYPT) of Waterloo Region has released new disaggregated Snapshot data from the 2023 Youth Impact Survey (YIS). The Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Snapshots are the fourth and fifth snapshots with data focusing on different subpopulations of young people in Waterloo Region.
  • Region of Waterloo delivering on commitment to climate aligned growth Waterloo Region - An integrated update on cornerstone initiatives that focus on growing Waterloo Region sustainably was shared with Regional Council today. ClimateActionWR presented progress towards our community greenhouse gas target and staff provided program updates highlighting work that supports climate transition.
  • Collaboration on archaeological work earns provincial award for diversity, equity, and inclusion Waterloo Region – The collaboration between Indigenous Communities and a Regional project team to successfully investigate a Late Woodland (1400 – 1600 CE) village has been recognized by the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA). The OPWA’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) award was celebrated at a Region of Waterloo Planning and Works Committee meeting on June 4.
  • Currents of Change exhibit, celebrating the Grand River opens at McDougall Cottage (1) Waterloo Region, ON – Currents of Change: Inspiring Action Along the Grand River, a new exhibit from the Region of Waterloo Museums, is now open at McDougall Cottage Historic Site. With a blend of history, ecology, Indigenous and settler narratives, Currents of Change examines the profound and dynamic connection between the Grand River, Waterloo Region’s heritage, and our collective future.
  • Water Conservation Bylaw in effect to ensure water supply for critical needs Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo’s annual Water Conservation Bylaw is in effect from May 31 to September 30. The bylaw limits outdoor water use through the high-demand summer months to ensure we have enough water for critical needs like drinking and firefighting.
  • GRT fares changing on July 1 (2) Waterloo Region – Effective July 1, 2024, Grand River Transit (GRT) fares are changing to balance value and affordability with the rising cost of operating transit. During the 2024 Plan and Budget process, an increase in fare prices was approved, in addition to new products and increased transfer times for all customers.
  • Rapid Regional Growth Outpacing Outdated Municipal Revenue Tools Waterloo Region – Region of Waterloo staff will present a first look at the projected 2025 Budget at the Region’s Administration and Finance Committee on June 4th, highlighting the challenge of rapidly growing resident needs with outdated financial tools to support required service expansions. “We grew by a community the size of Stratford last year alone,” said Regional Councillor and Chair of the Region’s Strategic Planning and Budget Committee Michael Harris.
  • Stockyards at YKF now open at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) Waterloo Region – Today, Stockyards is officially open for business at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF). The newly constructed space features a licensed sit-down dining area, grab-and-go options and retail merchandise located within the departures lounge.
