  • Region of Waterloo advocates for growing community at 2023 AMO conference Waterloo Region - Region of Waterloo Chair and Councillors advanced strategic social and economic priorities with the Government of Ontario this week at the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference. Over four days, the Regional delegation met with cabinet ministers, government officials and opposition leaders to discuss the future growth, wellbeing, and prosperity of Waterloo Region.
  • Region of Waterloo to meet with Provincial Ministers to Advocate for Local Priorities Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo will meet with provincial cabinet ministers next week  to discuss solutions to critical municipal issues, including housing and homelessness, paramedic offload delays, transportation improvements, child care access and mental health supports. A delegation of Regional Councillors will travel to London, Ontario for the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s (AMO) annual conference, August 20-23, 2023.
  • More bus service for Cambridge starting next month Waterloo Region – On Sept. 4, 2023, Grand River Transit will launch significant service improvements in Cambridge to provide more direct travel options, and expanded and more frequent service.
  • K-W Urban Native Wigwam Project to Open First Indigenous-led Transitional Housing in Waterloo Region Waterloo Region – K-W Urban Native Wigwam Project (KWUNWP) will open the region’s first Indigenous-led transitional housing project this week. Located at 34 Bridgeport Road East in Waterloo, the site will provide temporary housing for individuals experiencing homelessness who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit – Status and Non-Status).

  • 32 local creators awarded $215,096 by the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo Arts Fund (RWAF) is awarding a total of $215,096 to 32 local artists and arts organizations for projects slated to take place between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024. The Spring 2023 round of funding received 135 eligible applications, with requests totaling $932,701 – a near-million dollar ask underscoring the soaring needs of art-makers and creatives.

The story of Waterloo Region has often been told from settler and cis-heteronormative perspectives, painting Indigenous, racialized and 2SLGBTQ+ identities as “the other.” Centre for Community Based Research (CCBR) is conducting a strategic program review of the Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation (WRHF) from April to August 2023, to explore diverse priorities and interests in heritage in Waterloo Region, gain input on promising practices for engaging under-represented groups in heritage and seek recommendations for WRHF next steps in providing more equitable, diverse, and inclusive programming.
  • Official opening of the newly constructed baggage system at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) Region of Waterloo, ON – Today the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) officially opened its newly constructed outbound baggage system. The system is a critical piece of the second of the three phase Airport Terminal Expansion Project.
