  • Flexible transit coming to Breslau Waterloo Region – Beginning, July 11, Grand River Transit (GRT) will launch a new flexible transit option to serve the community of Breslau. In partnership with Metrolinx, the on-demand pilot project will connect residents to key destinations, including schools, employment centres, the Region of Waterloo International Airport, and the Waterloo-Wellington Flight Centre, as well as the GRT network with connections to GO Transit.
  • Official opening of the newly constructed departures lounge at the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) Region of Waterloo, ON – Today the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) officially opened its newly constructed departures lounge. The lounge is one piece of the airport’s $30.
  • Region proposes bold approach to shape community for future generations Waterloo Region –A draft amendment for the Regional Official Plan (ROP), that will help shape the community for future generations, will be presented at a special Planning and Works Committee meeting this afternoon. The draft amendment includes a recommended approach to growth, as well as draft policies related to affordable housing, economic prosperity, Indigenous relationships and reconciliation, equity and inclusion, growth management, and transformational climate action to support all residents.
  • Grand River Transit to receive first electric buses from Nova Bus Waterloo Region, June 22, 2022 – Waterloo Region residents can expect to see the first of several electric buses rolling down the streets next year as Grand River Transit (GRT) selects Nova Bus as its first electric bus provider. GRT has ordered an initial six electric buses from Nova Bus, a member of the Volvo Group and a leading North American transit bus manufacturer.
  • Region to seek direction from courts on next steps at encampment Waterloo Region – The Region will seek direction from the court on next steps if there is no voluntary compliance to vacate the encampment at 100 Victoria Street on or before June 30. Through this process, all interested parties will be provided with an opportunity to have their views made known.
  • Regional Council approves changes to speed limits in school zones to enhance safety Waterloo Region – Regional Council approved staff recommendations to adjust speed limits on Regional roads within school zones by day/time/month starting this September. Regional staff conducted a study to assess current traffic conditions at all 35 school zones that front a Regional road, and concluded that the varied uses of the Region’s roadway network required a new approach to setting speed limits in school zones.
  • Smart Waterloo Region’s Innovation Lab collaborates in newly established Youth Creativity Fund Waterloo Region – Smart Waterloo Region’s Innovation Lab (SWRIL) is proud to announce a collaboration with the recently established Youth Creativity Fund. The Fund, launched earlier this month by the Business and Education Partnership of Waterloo Region, allows youth in Waterloo Region to apply for micro grants to tackle open-ended problems through innovation, developing and enhancing critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Region to open inclusive emergency shelter, welcoming all gender identities, couples, and pets Waterloo Region – In response to feedback from individuals with lived experience, the Region of Waterloo is opening a new emergency shelter to support all gender identities, couples, and pets. Starting on Friday, June 24, 2022, the new emergency shelter will operate in the former Edith MacIntosh Child Care Centre located at 104 Stirling Avenue South in Kitchener.
  • GRT to pause service on National Indigenous Peoples Day Waterloo Region – Grand River Transit (GRT) will pause bus and ION train service at 2:15 p.m.
  • Region will update COVID-19 dashboard on Fridays Waterloo Region – Starting next week, the Waterloo Region COVID-19 Summary dashboard will be updated once a week on Fridays at 1:30 p.m.
